After a ten-year absence, Quoin Rock proudly reintroduces Nicobar Sauvignon Blanc—a wine that has remained one of the most requested from our portfolio. Last produced in 2012, Nicobar is celebrated for its distinctive character, shaped by the unique fusion of two terroirs: Cape Agulhas and Simonsberg-Stellenbosch.
A Name with a Story
Nicobar takes its name from the Danish cargo ship Nicobar, which met its fate off the Cape Agulhas coast in 1783. The ship was part of the Danish Asiatic Company’s fleet, carrying goods and valuable copper currency known as "plate money" from the East Indies back to Europe. But as the Nicobar approached the treacherous waters near the southernmost tip of Africa, disaster struck. The region's violent storms, hidden reefs, and strong currents proved fatal, and the ship was lost to the depths.
For over two centuries, the wreck remained undiscovered, shrouded in mystery beneath the Atlantic. Then, in 1987, divers uncovered a remarkable find near Quoin Point—8 tons of copper plate money from the Nicobar, making it one of the largest treasure discoveries of its kind. This rugged, windswept headland, marking the boundary between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, has long been feared by sailors. It sits near Quoin Island, a small, isolated landmass that has been a silent witness to countless shipwrecks over the centuries.
The Wine’s Connection to Place
Just as the Nicobar ship was shaped by the wild forces of nature, so too is the wine that carries its name. The vineyards for Nicobar Sauvignon Blanc sit in one of the most extreme maritime environments, battered by strong coastal winds, nourished by mineral-rich soils, and cooled by the frigid Atlantic currents. These elements infuse the wine with remarkable freshness, bright acidity, and a signature saline minerality—a true reflection of its place of origin.
This release is more than just a revival—it is a continuation of a story, one that mirrors the resilience of both the land and the wine it produces.
Nicobar is available in limited quantities. Experience the return of a cult classic.
